MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development

global challenges, engineering solutions

Daniel Navarro Bermudez, ESD 13-14, wins Climathon London with FiltAir team

Daniel, ESD13-14, is Graduate Sustainability Officer at Peabody Housing Association, London involved in many areas such as solar PV, renewable heat, energy efficiency and fuel poverty strategies.

Daniel took part in Climathon from Climate-KIC: a 24-hour challenge to design a solution for a local climate change problem, in this case for tackling London's air pollution problem and his team, "FiltAIR", won the challenge!

FiltAir, came up with the innovative idea of attaching pollutant filters to London buses, which will travel all over the city, all day long cleaning up the air quality in the city. FiltAir estimate that this method will take out 99% of pollutants in London’s air.

Course Overview

Context

The need to engage in better problem definition through careful dialogue with all stakeholder groups and a proper recognition of context.

Perspectives

An ability to work with specialists from other disciplines and professional groups acknowledging that technical innovation and business skills also must be understood, nurtured and combined as precursors to the successful implementation of sustainable solutions.

Change

An understanding of mechanisms for managing change in organisations so future engineers are equipped to play a leadership role.

Tools

An awareness of a range of assessment frameworks, sustainability metrics and methodologies such as Life Cycle Analysis, Systems Dynamics, Multi-Criteria Decision making and Impact Assessment.
