UK Strategies for Sustainable Cities

The present research analyses the context and the structure of the urban sustainability strategies for the U.K. with a special focus in London and London Borough of Enfield cases. Influences within and across European, national and local levels are identified through detailed analysis of the European Sustainable Cities and Towns Campaign, the EU Strategy for Sustainable Development, the EU Thematic Strategy in Urban Development, the Greater London Authority and the Enfield Council initiative. The first part of the investigation points out the most relevant elements for the understanding of the initiatives through descriptive analysis. Subsequently a comparative analysis evaluates the evolution of the content of the various initiatives over time. The work is completed by a discussion of the practical issues of the cases at local level, as well as their wider implications for urban sustainability.
