MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development

The course is a Professional Practice Programme designed for students from an engineering background, and preferably with some post graduate work experience in the engineering industry.  Students on the programme will have well-developed technical skills in engineering, science and perhaps other quantitative disciplines.  Organisations releasing such high-fliers will have the incentive of welcoming back graduates from this course who are particularly well versed in the issues surrounding sustainable development and who can add real value to the strategic thinking and direction of the organisation on their return.

The course is broadly based and inter-disciplinary and welcomes students from any field of engineering or associated discipline.

The need to engage in better problem definition through careful dialogue with all stakeholder groups and a proper recognition of context.

An ability to work with specialists from other disciplines and professional groups acknowledging that technical innovation and business skills also must be understood, nurtured and combined as precursors to the successful implementation of sustainable solutions.

An understanding of mechanisms for managing change in organisations so future engineers are equipped to play a leadership role.

Tools

An awareness of a range of assessment frameworks, sustainability metrics and methodologies such as Life Cycle Analysis, Systems Dynamics, Multi-Criteria Decision making and Impact Assessment.
