Application of the Simplified Climate Change Impact Assessment Tool (SCIAT) to Kouris Dam (Cyprus)

A climate change impact assessment was performed to investigate impacts on the water quantity and quality in the Kouris Dam on the island of Cyprus and subsequent effects on water treatment operations. Using the SCIAT methodology, it was discovered that in the earlier part of the 21st Century decreases in temperature (0.16?C in 2020s, 0.13?C in 2050s) and increases in precipitation (1.37% in 2020s, 1.77% in 2050s) would occur. This will probably cause increases in algal bloom occurrences and a small impact on water treatment operations. In the 2080s precipitation will decrease by 11.09% and temperature will increase by 0.6?C. This will improve water quality and water treatment operations. More modelling is required, due to lack of data and insufficient time for completion of the methodology. In addition to this, suitable mitigation and adaptation policies should be adopted.

Course Overview

Context

The need to engage in better problem definition through careful dialogue with all stakeholder groups and a proper recognition of context.

Perspectives

An ability to work with specialists from other disciplines and professional groups acknowledging that technical innovation and business skills also must be understood, nurtured and combined as precursors to the successful implementation of sustainable solutions.

Change

An understanding of mechanisms for managing change in organisations so future engineers are equipped to play a leadership role.

Tools

An awareness of a range of assessment frameworks, sustainability metrics and methodologies such as Life Cycle Analysis, Systems Dynamics, Multi-Criteria Decision making and Impact Assessment.
