A new book published by the International Water Association (IWA) on "Water-Wise Cities and Sustainable Water Systems: Concepts, Technologies, and Applications" (edited by Wang and Fu) includes a chapter based on the Dissertation of a former Engineering for Sustainable Development MPhil student (2017-2018), Upeshika Heenetigala.

Dick Fenner and Charles Ainger have recently updated their 2006 paper (co-authored with Peter Guthrie and Heather Cruickshank) "Widening engineering horizons: addressing the complexity of sustainable development" to examine how much progress towards sustainability the civil engineering profession has made in each of the eight key areas defined in the original paper.

We are delighted to welcome Dr. André Serrenho to the course team. Dr. Serrenho was recently appointed as a Lecturer in Engineering, Environment and Sustainable Development at the Department of Engineering.


 

Course Overview

Context

The need to engage in better problem definition through careful dialogue with all stakeholder groups and a proper recognition of context.

Perspectives

An ability to work with specialists from other disciplines and professional groups acknowledging that technical innovation and business skills also must be understood, nurtured and combined as precursors to the successful implementation of sustainable solutions.

Change

An understanding of mechanisms for managing change in organisations so future engineers are equipped to play a leadership role.

Tools

An awareness of a range of assessment frameworks, sustainability metrics and methodologies such as Life Cycle Analysis, Systems Dynamics, Multi-Criteria Decision making and Impact Assessment.
