The ESD MPhil students had a successful fieldtrip to Mid Wales at the start of April. The purpose of the Field Trip was to visit a number of organisations dealing largely in Development, Energy, or Sustainable Technologies mostly in the CONTEXT of mid Wales.

IChemE Senior Moulton Medal awarded to Dr Dick Fenner and Dr Feriha Mukuve

Dr Dick Fenner and Dr Feriha Mukuve (ESD MPhil 10 -11, PhD 12 -15) have been awarded the prestigious Senior Moulton Medal for 2015 by the Institution of Chemical Engineers for their paper "Scale variability of water, land and energy resource interaction and their influence on the food system in Uganda" published in Sustainable Production and Consumption Vol 2 April 2015: 79-95.


Course Overview

Context

The need to engage in better problem definition through careful dialogue with all stakeholder groups and a proper recognition of context.

Perspectives

An ability to work with specialists from other disciplines and professional groups acknowledging that technical innovation and business skills also must be understood, nurtured and combined as precursors to the successful implementation of sustainable solutions.

Change

An understanding of mechanisms for managing change in organisations so future engineers are equipped to play a leadership role.

Tools

An awareness of a range of assessment frameworks, sustainability metrics and methodologies such as Life Cycle Analysis, Systems Dynamics, Multi-Criteria Decision making and Impact Assessment.
