This thesis investigates efficient strategies for sustainable transportation in Shanghai. Advanced planning and design for sustainable transport are urgently needed in Shanghai, a metropolis experiencing an amazing development in both economic and social fields. The analysis in this thesis is based on several factors, namely current the status quo in Shanghai, the comparison studies between Shanghai and other international big cities. The aim is to develop an integrated transport system of good quality, high efficiency, man-centered, safe and full integration to satisfy the growing travel demand and to improve the whole city’s competitive power. After a full analysis of current problems in Shanghai’s transport and comparison with some other congested cities, the suggestion in improvement is given in “hard” and “soft” parts independently. The former one is concerned to the design and construction of transport facilities, considering travel manners, land use and city functions’ distribution, while the latter is in policies and management aspects. At the same time, the internal linkages between them are discussed as well.
